Builder gel is a thick gel painted over your own nails to add an apex, which is the small arch that stops a nail bending. It can extend slightly past the fingertip, but it is mainly a strengthener. Many salon menus call it BIAB, short for builder in a bottle.
A flat nail bends at the centre and splits down the middle. An arched one does not. Builder gel builds that arch where your nail does not have one, which is why it stops the splitting cycle rather than just covering it.
Most salons do not advertise it. Ask directly, and ask whether they build an apex or just paint it flat, because a flat builder layer does very little.
Against the alternatives
- Gel polish adds no strength at all. It is colour that lasts three weeks.
- Hard gel is stronger and builds real length, but it has to be filed off rather than soaked.
- Acrylic is stronger again and better for length past the fingertip.
- Builder gel sits between them. It soaks off, it adds real strength, and it looks like your own nail.

Clear overlay
No colour at all. The nail underneath shows through, stronger.

Sheer nude overlay
A wash of nude over the builder layer.

Strawberry milk
Sheer warm pink. The most requested builder colour.

Milky white
Semi-sheer off-white.

Skin-match nude
Matched to your tone.

Short squoval clear
Filed level with the fingertip. Nobody reads it as a treatment.

Micro French
A hairline tip over a builder base.

Baby boomer ombre
Nude into white with no line.

Cherry red
Blue-toned red over the overlay.

Chocolate brown
Warm espresso.

Oxblood
Deep brownish red.

Navy
Deep blue with a mirror shine.

Forest green
Deep green under gloss.

Sheer black wash
One sheer coat, coming out smoky grey.

Warm greige
Grey with brown in it.

Glazed pearl
Iridescent powder over the sheer base.

Chrome mirror
Powder over a cured gel layer on the overlay.

Cat eye navy
Magnetic band over builder.

Velvet taupe
Shimmer worked flat.

Matte mocha
Mid brown under matte.

Gold micro-line
A hairline lengthways on two nails.

Half moon in cream
A curve at the cuticle.

Milk bath marble
Fine grey veining.

Small extension
Two or three millimetres past the fingertip. About the limit for builder.

Almond overlay
A soft taper built into the overlay itself.

Builder on toes
Rare, and excellent if your toenails split.

Repair over a break
A single nail rebuilt rather than a whole set redone.
Upkeep
Three to four weeks between infills, because the nail underneath cannot flex. Ask for an infill rather than a full removal each time. Soaking off and rebuilding every month does more damage than the product ever would.
Questions people actually ask
What is builder gel?
A thick gel painted over your own nails to build an apex and add strength. It can extend slightly past the fingertip but it is mainly a strengthener.
Is builder gel the same as hard gel?
No. Builder gel soaks off in acetone. Hard gel has to be filed off, which is more damaging in the wrong hands.
How long does builder gel last?
Three to four weeks, a week longer than gel polish, because the nail underneath does not bend.
Will builder gel help my nails grow?
Indirectly. It stops them breaking at the length they usually break at, so they reach a length they would not otherwise reach.
