Gel-X is a pre-shaped soft gel tip glued over the entire nail and cured under a lamp. That is the whole product. It is not sculpted like acrylic and not built like hard gel, which is why it is faster to apply and the only extension system that soaks off cleanly.
Because the tip covers the whole nail rather than just the end, there is no join partway down to lift or discolour. That is why a Gel-X set often looks better at week three than an acrylic set does.
The trade-off is strength at length. Past about a quarter inch beyond the fingertip, acrylic holds better.
Cost, wear and removal
- A full set runs roughly fifty to ninety-five dollars, similar to acrylic and more than gel polish.
- Three to four weeks is realistic. What ends it is regrowth at the cuticle rather than the product failing.
- Removal is a proper soak in pure acetone after the surface is filed. Twenty to thirty minutes, and it comes away in sheets.
- It cannot be filled the way acrylic can. Most salons remove and reapply rather than backfill.
Gel-X against the alternatives
- Acrylic is stronger and cheaper to maintain, but the removal is harsher and the smell puts people off.
- Hard gel builds similar length but has to be filed off rather than soaked, which is more damaging in the wrong hands.
- Builder gel over your own nails adds strength without length and is the better choice if you are not chasing extension.
