Nail glue bonds skin in seconds and separates slowly. Every injury from it comes from trying to speed that up.
If two fingers are stuck, or skin is stuck to a nail, warm water and patience separate them without tearing. Pulling takes a layer of skin with it.
Glue on an eyelid, a lip or in an eye is a doctor rather than a home fix. Do not try to free it yourself.
The method
- Soak the area in warm soapy water for ten minutes. Warm, not hot.
- Add a spoon of oil to the water if you have it. Any cooking oil works.
- Roll the skin apart with a gentle back and forth motion rather than pulling straight.
- Repeat the soak if it resists. There is no rush.
- For a stubborn patch, hold an acetone-soaked cotton bud on it for thirty seconds, then roll again.
- Moisturise afterwards. Water and acetone both leave skin tight.
For a thick blob
Soak first, then peel the edge of the blob up with a fingernail and roll it off. A thick lump usually lifts as one piece once the edge releases. Do not file it while it is still on skin.
Preventing it next time
- Use a brush-on glue rather than a nozzle. Far easier to control.
- A thin layer on the nail and a thin layer in the tip. Excess glue squeezes out onto skin.
- Keep a cotton bud to hand and wipe any escape immediately, while it is still wet.
For glue on the nail plate and inside a tip, how to remove nail glue covers both.
Questions people actually ask
How do you get nail glue off skin fast?
Warm soapy water for ten minutes, then roll the skin apart. Acetone is faster and dries the skin considerably.
Can nail glue damage skin?
The glue itself rarely does. Pulling bonded skin apart does, which is the only real risk here.
What if my fingers are stuck together?
Soak in warm soapy water and roll them apart slowly. Never pull them straight apart.
