The flared shape is back after twenty years, and it turns out to be genuinely good for one thing: it gives you more surface to decorate than any other shape.

Duck nails widen out towards the tip instead of tapering in. They were a nineties and early two-thousands shape, they were mocked for a decade, and they came back because the thing everyone laughed at turns out to be useful: a flared tip is the largest flat canvas any nail shape offers.

Ask for subtle, not literal

The current version flares maybe twenty percent wider than the nail bed. The old version flared twice that and is what gave the shape its reputation.

It has to be built on a form or a tip, so this is an enhancement shape only. There is no natural-nail version.

What it suits

Narrow nail beds benefit most, because the flare adds visual width where there is none. Wide beds get overwhelmed. It also needs length: on a short nail the flare has no distance to develop over and just reads as a badly filed square.

Questions people actually ask

What are duck nails?

A shape that widens towards the tip instead of tapering in, built on a form or a tip. Named for the resemblance to a duck bill.

Are duck nails practical?

Surprisingly, yes at short lengths. The flare adds strength at the tip rather than removing it, unlike almond or stiletto.

Can you get duck nails on natural nails?

No. The flare has to be built out past the natural nail, so it needs acrylic or hard gel.

Why are duck nails popular again?

Because the flat flared tip is the largest canvas of any shape, which suits an era where the design matters more than the silhouette.
