Nail polish dissolves in specific solvents. Most household substances are not those solvents, which is why most of the advice on this subject does not work. Two things do work reasonably well and one works badly but works.
All of them are slower, messier and harder on the nail than a two-dollar bottle of acetone-free remover. Use them when you genuinely have no alternative, not as a routine.
What works
- Hand sanitiser with a high alcohol content. Saturate a cotton pad, hold on the nail for thirty seconds, then wipe. It shifts most of a thin coat and struggles with dark colours.
- Rubbing alcohol, the same way. Slightly better than sanitiser because there is nothing else in it.
- Paint over with clear polish, then wipe immediately while both are wet. The fresh solvent softens the coat underneath. Messy and it genuinely works.
What does not work
- Hairspray. Some contain a little alcohol, most leave a sticky film.
- White vinegar and lemon juice. Neither dissolves polish. Together they do nothing either.
- Toothpaste. It is a mild abrasive, so it scrubs the top off the polish and the top off the nail plate.
- Hot water. It softens nothing and swells the nail plate, which makes everything worse.
- Deodorant spray. The same story as hairspray.
What to avoid entirely
Peeling and scraping. Both take layers of nail plate with them, and the peeling that follows lasts far longer than the manicure did. If you cannot get it off today, leaving it on is genuinely the better option.
For the proper method, how to remove nail polish.
Questions people actually ask
Does hand sanitiser remove nail polish?
Partially. A high-alcohol sanitiser held on the nail for thirty seconds shifts most of a thin coat and struggles with dark shades.
Does toothpaste remove nail polish?
It abrades the surface off, which also abrades the nail plate. It is one of the worse suggestions in circulation.
Does vinegar remove nail polish?
No. Neither does lemon juice, on its own or mixed with vinegar.
What if nothing works?
Leave it on until you can buy remover. Polish sitting on a nail is harmless. Scraping it off is not.
