The method
- Clip the length down first if the set is long. Less product means less soaking.
- File the bulk off the surface with the coarse file. You want a thin layer left, not bare nail. Stop when the product goes dull and thin rather than glossy and thick.
- Switch to 180 grit for the last pass so you do not skim the natural nail.
- Oil the skin around each nail.
- Soak cotton in acetone, press onto the nail, wrap tightly in foil.
- Leave fifteen to twenty minutes before checking the first finger.
- The acrylic should scrape away like wet paper. If it flakes or resists, rewrap for another ten.
- Repeat until it is gone. A thick set can need two or three rounds.
- Buff the surface lightly, then oil the nail and skin. Daily for a week.
How the nails will feel afterwards
Thin and slightly tender for about a week, even after a careful removal. Acetone strips everything and the nail plate has been under product for weeks. That is normal. What is not normal is white patchy marks or a nail that hurts to press, both of which mean over-filing.
Give it a month before another set if you can, or ask for builder gel instead, which strengthens rather than covers.
When to let a salon do it
