How to Remove Press-On Nails Without Wrecking Your Nails

Press-on glue is cyanoacrylate. Warm soapy water breaks the bond slowly and acetone breaks it fast. Neither needs force, and force is the only thing that damages a nail here.

The gentle method, keeps the set

• Fill a bowl with warm water and a good squeeze of dish soap. Warm, not hot.
• Soak your fingertips for ten to fifteen minutes. Add a splash of oil if you have it.
• Work an orange stick gently under the free edge of one nail and wiggle, do not lever.
• The tip should release along one side, then lift away. If it does not, soak another five minutes.
• Peel the old glue out of the inside of the tip with tweezers once it is dry.
• Buff any glue residue off your natural nail very lightly, then oil.

The fast method, destroys the set

• Soak a cotton pad in pure acetone, hold on the nail, wrap in foil.
• Ten minutes, then lift with an orange stick.
• Acetone dissolves the glue and usually warps the tip, so the set will not be reusable.
• Oil the skin afterwards. Acetone strips it hard.

Reusing a set

A good set survives three or four wears if you take it off in soapy water and clean the old glue out. That is what makes the category genuinely cheap over a year rather than just cheap once. Store them in the original case rather than loose, because a bent tip will not sit flat again.

What not to do

• Do not pull. It is the fastest way to a thin, sore nail.
• Do not use dental floss to saw underneath. It works and it tears the nail plate.
• Do not clip the tip off with the natural nail still attached.
• Do not reapply immediately. Give the nail a day and some oil.
