Builder gel for most people
If you are not chasing length, builder gel is the one to ask for. It adds an apex, stops the flexing that causes splits, lasts a week longer than gel polish, and still soaks off. Acrylic wins the moment you want real length.
Strength
Acrylic wins at length. It is the most rigid material available, which is why it dominates long shapes. That rigidity is also its downside: it does not flex, so when it catches, the shock transfers to the natural nail underneath. Gel systems are slightly more flexible and more forgiving in that moment.
Cost over a year
- Acrylic can be filled, which is half to two thirds the price of a full set. That makes it the cheapest to maintain.
- Gel-X and dip usually get removed and reapplied, so every appointment is closer to full price.
- Gel polish is the cheapest per appointment and the shortest wear.
- Over twelve months, acrylic is typically the least expensive extension.
Damage
Neither product damages a nail. Two things do: over-filing the natural nail during prep, and pulling a set off instead of soaking it. Both are possible with either product. The practical difference is that acrylic and hard gel need more aggressive filing to remove, so a careless technician has more opportunity to do harm.
Smell, time and comfort
- Acrylic has a strong odour from the monomer. Gel has almost none.
- Acrylic sets on its own schedule. Gel does not set until it is cured, which gives the technician unlimited time to place it.
