Acrylic is two things mixed together: a powder called polymer and a liquid called monomer. A brush picks up both, forms a bead, and that bead is shaped onto the nail. It hardens in air within about a minute. No lamp, no curing, no waiting.

What happens in the appointment
- Cuticles pushed back and the nail surface lightly buffed to remove shine.
- A dehydrator and a primer, so the product bonds rather than lifting.
- A tip glued on, or a paper form fitted, if you are having length.
- Beads of acrylic placed and shaped, usually three per nail.
- Filing to shape once it has hardened, then buffing.
- Colour and topcoat, often gel rather than polish.
What it is not
- Not gel. Gel cures under a lamp; acrylic hardens in air.
- Not press-ons. Those are pre-made tips glued on with nothing built over them.
- Not dip. Dip is coloured acrylic powder set with a resin rather than a monomer.
- Not permanent. It grows out with your nail and needs filling or removing.
Product touching skin. Anything on the cuticle or sidewall lifts within days, and the gap underneath is where moisture and bacteria get in.
Pulling a set off instead of soaking it. That takes layers of nail plate with it, and it is the source of almost every acrylic horror story.
Upkeep and cost over a year
A full set every two or three months with fills in between. A fill is usually half to two thirds the price of a set, which makes acrylic the cheapest extension to maintain. Budget for one repair somewhere in there if you choose a long tapered shape.
Is it right for you
- For real length that survives a month, yes. Nothing else holds as well.
- For strength without length, a short overlay works and almost nobody reads it as acrylic.
- For a gentler removal, Gel-X or builder gel are better choices.
- If you develop itching or a rash around the nails, stop. Acrylate allergy is common and worsens with exposure.
