Ordinary polish comes off in seconds with the right remover and turns into a smeared mess with the wrong technique. There is no filing and no soaking involved, which is what separates it from gel and acrylic.

Which remover

  • Acetone-free for ordinary polish. Slower, far gentler on the nail and the skin.
  • Pure acetone for gel, acrylic and glitter. Faster and drying.
  • Never use pure acetone on ordinary polish out of habit. It strips oils the nail needs and leaves the plate chalky.

The method

  • Soak a cotton pad properly. A damp pad smears; a wet one lifts.
  • Press it onto the nail and hold for ten seconds before moving. This is the step that stops the smearing.
  • Wipe once, from cuticle to tip, in one direction.
  • Use a fresh section of pad for each nail.
  • For glitter, hold the soaked pad on for a full thirty seconds before wiping.
  • Wash your hands afterwards, then oil the cuticles.

Dark colours and stains

Reds, blues and purples can leave a yellow cast on the nail plate. A base coat prevents it entirely, and it is the main reason to use one beyond adhesion. If staining has already happened, buff very lightly and wait. It grows out in a few weeks and scrubbing does more harm than the stain.

Things that do not work

  • Hairspray. It contains a little alcohol and mostly leaves a sticky film.
  • White vinegar and lemon juice. Neither dissolves polish.
  • Rubbing alcohol. It will shift a very thin fresh coat and nothing more.
  • Peeling. It takes nail plate with it, exactly as with gel.

For gel, how to remove gel nail polish is a different process entirely.
